JEDD

APPRENTICE - GRAFFITI INSPIRED - COMIC CULTURE

Tell us a bit about yourself

Yo, I’m Jedd, the apprentice at Zandaka. I spend a lot of my time drawing, etching, obsessing over books and anything I can take inspiration from. In my spare time like to collect shit.

I’m a nerd really.

What were you into growing up?

Man, growing up I was a sponge. Soaking up everything around me and giving everything a shot. I was the youngest in my family so I took a lot of shit on that id see my siblings do. I gravitated heavily towards the skating and graffiti side of things.

I loved anything that felt a bit rough around the edges,

however I will always thank music, games and art for getting me to where I am.

What made you want to get into tattooing?

One big thing is the idea of

people wanting to come to me to wear my art on them for life

I feel would be super rewarding. I’ve always gravitated towards tattoos. It resonates with everything I love. I wanted to be able to do it for as long as I can remember

How did you end up at Zandaka?

Taaj had actually been a mate of mine for years and he had been trying to get me to land an apprenticeship. Anyway, I came in to Zandaka, got tattooed and for the rest of the day until close I stayed and drew. Later on I messaged Nate to thank him for allowing me to do that,

then he offered me a spot and I’ve never left.

Biggest inspirations right now?

Everything inspires me

but lately underground comix are a huge thing for me. Freak brothers, Robert crumb, that sorta shit.

What kind of art are you most drawn to?

Everything. My love for art is broad. Theres something in everything

What styles or cultures outside tattooing influence you the most?

Graffiti or skate culture influence me the most. The whole

something out of nothing notion.

What’s usually playing in your headphones?

Dude I’m a weirdo.

I chuck my shit on shuffle, we go from Cyndi Lauper to parkway drive to Brad Strut.

Favourite Melbourne spot?

If we’re talking food spot, Dragon Hot Pot.

What does “built for the scene” mean to you?

Supporting likeminded people,

this culture is a community.

If you’re built for the scene that means you’re doing your part.

What are you most excited to learn during your apprenticeship?

To me knowledge is a currency, so learning everything is important and I’m excited for all of it.

Where do you want tattooing to take you eventually?

I want to be able to build a style that people recognise as me. I want to veer from the fundamental path and have fun with it.

What kind of artist do you want to become?

A unique one.
